This was Gaudí’s first major commission. In 1883, Manel Vicens i Montaner, a stockbroker and currency trader, entrusted the young architect with the design of his summer house-garden in the quiet neighborhood of Gràcia.
The Casa Vicens (1883-1885) stands as an unusual oasis with an oriental and Mudejar aroma, covered with spectacular green and white tiles. It is his first masterpiece and one of the first buildings that initiated modernism in Catalonia and Europe. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.
On this guided and accessible tour, you will learn about the beginnings of the architect Antoni Gaudí and have the opportunity to see some of his most famous early works.
This tour offers you a reverse view of Gaudi’s architectural evolution. Starting with the imposing Pedrera and ending with the oriental and mudejar aroma and the spectacular green and white tiles that frame the Casa Vicens.
The tour begins outside La Pedrera, also known as ‘Casa Mila’. Here, you will meet your guide and have time to admire the building’s facade, which is covered with rough stone cladding. The guide will tell you anecdotes about Gaudí’s life, you will appreciate the details of his last great work and the great legacy he left for the city of Barcelona.
Then you will walk to the Salvador Espriu Gardens, named after a famous Catalan poet. The gardens are located just 450 meters from the La Pedrera building and you can make the journey at a leisurely pace. You will walk through the gardens and learn a bit of their history, including the works of art that have been placed there.
The last stop on the tour will be Casa Vicens, which was his first major project. The house is located in the Gràcia neighborhood, and is accessed from the main street (Gran Carrer de Gràcia), which has many modernist buildings that can be seen along the way.
You will have about 90 minutes at Casa Vicens to explore and learn about Gaudí. The house was commissioned by Manel Vicens i Montaner, a stockbroker and currency trader who entrusted the young architect with the design of his summer garden house in the quiet neighborhood of Gràcia.
It was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 2017, housing permanent exhibitions on Gaudí’s inspiration, as well as a variety of temporary exhibitions, an educational program and event spaces.
